Canale d' Agordo.
The birthplace of Pope Paul I.

Some days ago i visited Canale d' Agordo with a group.
This is a beautiful small village in the Veneto region; some miles from Belluno (IT).
It is located at 976 meters on the sea level.
The former name of this village until 1964 was Forno Canale.
The first Italian cooperative dairy was founded in Canale d' Agordo; in 1872.
Even the first Italian brewery was founded in Canale; in 1847.
Canale d' Agordo was the birthplace of pope John Paul I (Albino Luciani).
He was born in this village in 1912 and died in Città del Vaticano in 1978.
Albino Luciani was pope for only 33 days.
We visited the museum dedicated to him. It is located in the main square.
The museum houses lots of things belonged to this pope. Books, pictures et al.
You can also watch some videos about his life here.
Picture taken from a web site.
There are around 1055 inhabitants in Canale and some shops and restaurants.
Near the main square there is a hotel as well. There are also other accomodations in the village.
There are lots of granaries in Canale d' Agordo. These are called "tablà" in the local language.
These were used for livestock and for hay.
Starting from the main square, we walked along a long road to get to pope John' s house.
This building is the Casa delle Regole. It dates to the 1640.
Here, all the village' s represantatives gathered . It was a kind of town council.
While following the tour guide, a member of the group spotted a bakery.
This was the place I needed to get in! I had breakfast quite early that morning.
So, I got in the shop to get a pastry.
A modern house.
Pope John Paul' s house is open to visitors.
It was built at the end of the 1700. It was enlarged in 1958 and restored some years ago.
Inside the house you can visit the cellars, the pope father' s workshop, the kitchen and several other rooms.
The kitchen.
I liked this small village a lot and I would have stayed there a bit more!

Nice photos of what looks like an interesting place, Maurizio. I agree with you, it’s a good place to stay longer and explore it.
